The 54-year-old Tassie mum putting her body on the line to give her daughter the ultimate gift – 7NEWS
A Tasmanian mother of five is putting her body on the line to deliver her health plagued daughter the ultimate gift of life. Maree Arnold is now in the final stages of pregnancy, in what experts have labelled an extremely rare case. Maree is 54 years old, and almost 30 weeks pregnant. But the baby growing inside her won’t be her daughter – it will be her grandchild. More than two decades after last giving birth, she has become a gestational carrier for her daughter Meagan White. The 28-year-old has no uterus. She was born with MRKH (Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser) syndrome, a rare disorder that affects one in 5000 women. IVF was the only option. The couple searched as far as Canada for a suitable surrogate, then Maree proposed an option that no-one had ever considered. They thought Maree’s age would be a barrier, as it’s recommended that gestational carriers are under 40 years of age. Experts say mother-daughter surrogacy is very rare. But Maree’s gift to her daughter proves that when you have love and hope – anything is possible.
