The pregnant partner of Alex 'Chumpy' Pullin, who conceived the snowboarder's child via IVF after his sudden death, has opened up about delivering their child within weeks.
Ellidy Pullin is weeks away from the joyous moment of welcoming her first child, but will sadly do it without the father of her baby by her side.
The widow of Australian snowboarder Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin announced her pregnancy earlier this year – nearly 12 months after his sudden death.
She conceived via IVF after retrieving sperm from the Olympian’s body posthumously. The Gold Coast athlete was spearfishing in July 2020 when he suffered a shallow water blackout and drowned.
As she nears her due date, Ellidy has opened up about the joy and grief she expects to feel giving birth.

Ellidy and Chumpy had been together for eight years and had started trying for a baby in the months leading up to his death at age 32.
On her Darling, Shine!Podcast, with friend Chloe Fisher, Ellidy remembers fondly Chumpy telling her he could not wait to have his own child every time they saw families together at the beach.
“Every day I see guys walking along the beach with their chicks and the guy is carrying the baby in the carrier on his chest and the girl’s got the dog,” she said.
“When I see a dad with a baby it f***ing kills me, and I am so happy for that person, it’s not a pity party here.
“I’m having a baby which is going to be the most beautiful thing ever and bittersweet in that it’s almost going to create more trauma here and there.”
During the birth Ellidy admits she would be grieving for Chumpy, but the baby would be “saving my own life” and “saving Chumpy’s life in a sense that I’m bringing part of him back”.
“My grief is for Chump, he’s missing out on being a dad, I see dads with their babies knowing how good he would have been,” she said.

The influencer gets the most emotional imagining all of the ‘firsts’ that Chumpy will miss out on.
“He deserves this time, he wanted this, he would have been the best dad,” she said.
“Think about the birthdays, the first birthday, all the little milestones like the first word, first steps and everything, I’ll just want to call him and talk to him.”
The has now come to understand that her grief and joy will always co-exist.
In an Instagram post August Ellidy admitted nothing was ever going to “tie a neat bow around my grief”.
“In fact pregnancy, birth and motherhood will likely create secondary losses and fresh shoots of grief in the myriad ‘I wish you were here’ pangs that shoulder everything I do,” she said.
“One might think that on the other side of grief lies joy, but I’ve learned grief, hope, strength and happiness can co-exist. I will continue to carry the torch of our future, and soon a little piece of Chumpy will be back in my arms again.”

“With a heart-wrenching plot twist in the middle, I am honoured to finally welcome a piece of the phenomenon that is Chumpy back into this world!
“When my love had this accident, we all held onto hope that I’d pregnant that month. We’d been trying for a baby.

In a Darling, Shine! Podcast at the time Ellidy revealed details about the moment she decided to continue the couple’s plans for children.
In the hours after his death her friends, family and experts helped her request and retrieve Pullin’s sperm for a potential future baby.
“You have up until 36 hours to retrieve sperm from a dead person’s body,” she said.
“We were able to hustle – Chumpy’s parents were in town, everyone was signing court documents, legal documents and dealing with the coroners and the lawyers and the doctors.
“We found an amazing doctor from an IVF clinic who went in and retrieved Chump’s sperm before the time was up.
“This is the biggest miracle ever… Chump is guiding this, he would want nothing more than for me to have his kid, everything just feel rights.”
