Ozempic and Pregnancy Planning: Questions Before IVF

Review semaglutide pregnancy-planning and procedure questions with your prescribing and fertility teams.

Ozempic contains semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. Its prescribing information lists diabetes-related indications, not infertility treatment. Managing metabolic health may be part of broader care, but online reports of unexpected pregnancies do not establish that Ozempic is a fertility medicine.

Plan with both prescribing and fertility clinicians

The May 2026 prescribing information says semaglutide should be discontinued at least two months before a planned pregnancy. Ask your clinicians to translate that label requirement into your own pregnancy-planning and diabetes-management plan. Do not use this article as a personal stop date or change a prescription without a coordinated plan.

Discuss procedures separately

The label also warns about pulmonary aspiration during general anesthesia or deep sedation and instructs patients to tell clinicians about planned procedures. Egg retrieval may involve sedation. Tell the anesthesia and fertility teams the exact product you use and ask for their procedure-specific instructions. A pregnancy washout recommendation is not a substitute for an anesthesia assessment.

Prepare a complete medication history

Bring the medication name, prescribing clinician, reason for treatment, and recent changes. Include other prescriptions and nonprescription products. Ask who will coordinate the plan, how blood glucose or other health needs will be managed, and what to do if pregnancy occurs unexpectedly. Other GLP-1 products have their own labels and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Questions for your care team

  • How does my pregnancy plan affect this prescription?
  • Who coordinates my metabolic care while the plan changes?
  • What instructions apply to a planned procedure or unexpected pregnancy?
